Power & Wisdom
It Takes Both!
It is Power and Wisdom, not Wisdom or Power!
Matthew 4:23 "And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people."
Then, in Matthew 9:23, it says, "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity."
These are bookend scriptures. They say the same thing. So simple. Jesus communicated the Kingdom through words and power. The Wisdom and Power of God communicate one thing: HIS LOVE.
Our ministry must contain both, also. We have to communicate using words and power. We like to emphasize one or the other. What Matthew writes in between the bookend scriptures demonstrates both statements, namely the Sermon on the Mount and an account of Jesus’ healing ministry. Jesus taught on the beatitudes to show that heart matters. The position of our heart matters.
But we can’t ignore power! It is the evidence of belief. But belief has to be applied to our hearts also. As we read the Beatitudes we need to cry out in belief, “God release this in me. I know you are in me, and you have these characteristics. You are in me, so help me oppose what is in me that opposes this heart position.”
Pastor Dave Olson lays out the Beatitudes this way:
Personal - 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Godward - 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Manward - 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Godward - 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Manward - 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Godward - 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Manward - 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Usward - 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Prayer: Father, help us position ourselves in you to demonstrate the wisdom and power of God. Help us be living Beatitudes, as well as living demonstrations of your incredible power. Amen.
