Easter Notes

  1. Intro-  Today I want to cover some basics.  I found myself this week having questions in my head about the purpose of the Resurrection!
    1.  I then I thought maybe I should cover the basis facts of Jesus that enable Him to be our ticket to eternity with God.  That is really the focus.
    2.  Even though I talk about revival all the time.
    3. Our main focus is eternity.  This life is just a vapor compared to what is in store for us after we leave this body of ours.
    4. A lot of times we just focus on the hear and now which is Ok but we need to grasp out eternity and how Jesus provided for us and those who will trust in Him
  2. God is a covenant God
    1. Contract vs Covenant

                                              i.     Covenant is unto death

                                            ii.     It is transferred to offspring

                                          iii.     We have a representative

1.     David and Goliath

    1. Adam is our first rep

                                              i.     He fails

                                            ii.     We inherit his condition and all sickness, sin, and separation from God is passed down.

    1. Jesus is our new rep

                                              i.     Rom 5:12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned— 13for before the law was given, sin was in the world.

                                            ii.     17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. 18Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. 19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

  1. Jesus was born innocent
    1. Born of a virgin
    2. He didn’t inherit the sin gene
    3. This enabled Him to be the spotless sacrifice
  2. Jesus lived a perfect life
    1. Heb 4:15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin
    2. He fulfilled the requirement of the law for us.
  3. He died as a perfect sacrifice
    1. Matt 26:28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

                                              i.     Isaiah 53 read it 700 years before Jesus was in ministry

                                            ii.      w ho has believed what he has heard from us?[a]
    And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected[b] by men,
    a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d] grief;[e]
and as one from whom men hide their faces[f]
    he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

                                          iii.     4                Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

                                           iv.     7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

                                             v.     10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;[g]
when his soul makes[h] an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see[i] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[j]
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[k]
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

    1. Men in Black ending
  1. He arose!
    1. Acts 2:24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
    2. Rom 6:5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
    3. Because of His Resurrection

                                              i.     We get to be resurrected

                                            ii.     Rom 6:20But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.

                                          iii.     We have victory over sin!

2.    1 Cor 15:17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.

3.    When Do we get this?

a.    When Jesus returns

                                                                                                    i.     We get to be resurrected

                                           iv.     You get to be controlled by the Spirit not Sin

1.     rom 8:9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.  12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.[g] And by him we cry, "Abba,[h] Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
